|
Avoidable mortality is defined as deaths caused by certain predefined conditions, which could ideally be averted through effective public health and medical interventions. Avoidable mortality is an indicator that assesses the quality of health services and public health policies. In 2014, 34.9% of all deaths were avoidable in Korea. Although males had higher percentage of avoidable deaths, numbers have declined in both males and females. Avoidable mortality for neoplasm was highest among cause groups. This was followed by injuries, which outnumbered cardiovascular diseases in 2003. The rate of preventable mortality was higher compared to amenable mortality, indicating the need to further strengthen preventive measures in both healthcare and public health policies.
